Current affairs 15 - January - 2016

1)   India’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI) has launched dedicated specialized branch for start-ups called ‘SBI InCube’ in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It was announced by BI Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya in Bengaluru, Karnataka
2)   The 15th edition of bilateral exercise by the Indian Coast Guard and its Japanese counterpart titled ‘Sahayog-Kaijin 2016’ has begun off the coast of Chennai, Tamil Nadu in the Bay of Bengal. Key facts Focus of Exercise: Anti-piracy procedures, search and rescue operations and interoperability between the two forces and other areas of common professional interest.
3)   The indigenously-built third generation anti-tank missile Nag was successfully test fired at Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan. Test During the test, the missile successfully hit the target 4 km away during a night trial validating enhanced capability of Imaging-Infrared seeker (IIS). It mainly guides the missile to the target. The main purpose of test to validate Thermal Target System (TTS) was also tested. TTS had simulated a target similar to an operational tank generating thermal signature. With this successful test Nag missile was now ready for final and pre-induction user trials.
4)   Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has announced that India’s grid-connected solar power generation capacity has crossed the 5,000 Mega Watt (MW) mark. Presently, Government has set an ambitious plan to achieve 175 Giga Watt (GW) of power generation capacity from renewable sources by 2022. It includes 100 GW from solar and 60 GW from wind. Under the National Solar Mission (NSM), Union Government increased the solar power generation capacity addition target by five times from 20,000 MW to 100 GW by 2022.
5)   Indian Army Day is being observed every year on 15 January in India. This year it will be the 68th Indian Army Day. Significance of Day: On this day in 1949, Lt. General (later Field Marshal) Kodandera Madappa Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army (of the independent India) by succeeding British Army General Roy Butcher (last British Commander-in-Chief of India.). This day inspires the troops to continue to enrich the glorious traditions of the Indian Army with their dedication and sacrifice. Events: It is celebrated every year at all the Army Command headquarters and national capital by organizing army parades including many other military shows.
6)   British actor Alan Rickman passed away in London, England. He was 69 and was suffering from cancer. He was one of Britain’s best-loved acting stars especially for his complex antagonist acting in films like Harry Potter, Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
7)   Union Government has inaugurated the first phase of permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) at Vithura in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was inaugurated by Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani in presence of Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The IISER Thiruvananthapuram is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards. It had started functioning in the state in August 2008 with a transit campus at the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET).
