1) World Radio Day (WRD) is observed globally on 13th February to remember the unique power of radio that touches lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe. Significance of Day: It marks global celebration of radio as a forum for information and entertainment that helps to bridge communication gap for remote communities and empowering people. 2016 Theme: “Radio in Times of Emergency and Disaster”. It signifies radio as the communication medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide in the quickest in times of emergency and disaster.
2) A new study has claimed that a natural extract derived from the neem tree can potentially be used to treat pancreatic cancer without harming normal, healthy cells. The study was conducted by scientists from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso). The findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports.
3) Tamar Hahn from Israel has been appointed as the Director of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She took the charge of the office after she was appointed to this post by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Prior to this appointment, she was the Regional Adviser for Resource Mobilization and Partnerships at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Regional Office for the Caribbean and Latin America in Panama City (Panama).
4) Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has released the National Framework for Malaria Elimination (NFME) 2016-2030 at New Delhi. The framework aims to eliminate mosquito borne malaria disease from the country by 2030. This is for the first time government’s health policy has framed intervention have deliverables and time-bound targets.
