1) The first phase of the world’s largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant was launched in the Souss-Massa-DrĂ¢a area in Morocco. It is part of Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex which will produce enough energy for more than one million Moroccan households on completion by 2018.
2) Chhattisgarh Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Railway to form a joint venture (JV) company for the expansion of railway tracks in the state. With this Chhattisgarh became 5th state to join hands with the Indian Railways for speedy execution of rail projects through JV route
3) Veteran film director Aurobindo Mukherjee passed away in Kolkata, West Bengal after ailing from geriatric problems. He was 97. Mukherjee was the maker of cult Bengali classics like ‘Mouchak, ‘Agniswar” and ‘Nishipadma’, all of them starred matinee idol Uttam Kumar in the early 1970s. He was younger brother of famous novelist Balaichand Mukhopadhyay who is popularly known as Bonophool. He had joined Tollywood in 1950s. Shakti Samanta’s film Amar Prem was inspired by Mukherjee’s ‘Nishipadma’ which had starred Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Mukherjee had given debut role to Jaya Bhaduri (Jaya Bachchan) in the film Dhanyee Meye in 1971.
4) Four Indian-Americans have been selected to the prestigious US National Academy of Engineering (NAE). They are part of total 80 selected members list selected for their valuable contributions to the society. Selected Indian-Americans are Anil K. Jain: He was elected for his contributions to the practice of biometrics and field of engineering. He is an IIT-Kanpur alumnus and currently working as distinguished professor at the Michigan State University in East Lansing in the department of computer science and engineering.
5) Union Government has sanctioned about 580 crore rupees for Agartala-Akhaura railway link Project to connect Kolkata (West Bengal) with Tripura via Bangladesh. The sanctioned fund will be used for the laying of the five km railway track up to Bangladesh border from Agartala. It is Agartala-Akhaura Railway Link Project It is 15 km long strategic railway route that would connect the Indian Railways with the Bangladesh Railways. The work on this project is expected to complete by 2017. Of the 15 km strategic railway track, 10 km falls in the Bangladesh side and the rest 5 km falls in India. It was initiated after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India in January 2010 when both countries had agreed to lay the railway track.
6) The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and European Union (EU) have signed an agreement to improve Cooperation in Cyber Defence to counter modern forms of hybrid warfare. In this regard a technical agreement was signed at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium between both organisations which have 22 member countries in common. It was signed between NATO Computer Incident Response Capability (NCIRC) and the Computer Emergency Response Team – European Union (CERT-EU).
7) The UAE’s national oil company Abu Dhabi National Oil (ADNOC) Company has agreed to store crude oil in India’s maiden Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs) storage. It will be first of its kind deal in which India has partner with other country for storing crude oil in the SPR storage for emergency purpose. Strategic Petroleum Reserves: India is building underground SPR storages at Visakhapatnam (1.33 million tonnes capacity), Mangalore (1.5 million tonnes) and Padur (2.5 million tonnes) to store about 5.33 million tonnes of crude oil. These SPRs will act as a valuable buffer against short term oil supply disruptions and global price shocks as India is 79 per cent dependent on imports to meet its crude oil needs.
8) In recently released Intellectual Property Index (IPI) by United States Chamber of Commerce (USCC), India was ranked 37th among the surveyed 38 countries. These 38 countries benchmarked in the 2016 index accounts for nearly 85% of the global GDP. Venezuela ranked lowest below India at 38th position with 6.42 points on the index.
