Current affairs 09 - January - 2016

1)  The Union Government has reappointed Dr Urjit Patel as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a second three-year term. As Deputy Governor of RBI, Dr Patel looks after Monetary Policy, Economic Policy Research, Deposit Insurance, Statistics and Information Management and Right to Information etc.
2)  Ace Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis have won the 2016 WTA Brisbane International Tennis trophy in the women’s doubles category. In the final match played at Brisbane (Australia), the top seeded duo defeated German pair of Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic by 7-5, 6-1 score.
3)  Women’s Singles Title Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) has won the 2016 WTA Brisbane International tennis trophy in the Women’s Singles Category. In the final match she defeated Angelique Kerber of Germany by 6–3, 6–1 score.
4)  President Pranab Mukherjee has promulgated the Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Ordinance, 2016 to make amendments to the Enemy Property Act, 1968. The Ordinance was promulgated by President as per provisions of Article 123 of Constitution of India that gives him legislative powers in consultation with Council of Union Ministers. The proposed amendments in the parent Act seeks to deal with the loopholes in the existing law. Proposed Amendments are Once an enemy property is vested to the Custodian it shall continue to be vested in him. It shall not revert back to enemy subject or enemy firm due to reasons such as death of subject or firm ceased to function. The law of succession does not apply to enemy property. Henceforth there cannot be transfer of any property vested in the custodian by an enemy till it is disposed of in accordance with the provisions of the Act.
5)  Governor’s rule has been imposed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) for sixth time as the process of formation new government following the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is taking some time. It was imposed after President Pranab Mukherjee accepted the recommendations forwarded by Union Home Ministry on the basis of a recommendation from J&K Governor NN Vohra.
