1. Invasive species of
snowflake coral discovered off coast of Thiruvananthapuram
Scientists have explored presence of colonies of an invasive
species of snowflake coral (Carijoa riisei) off the coast of Thiruvananthapuram
and Kanyakumari. They were discovered at 10 metre depth off Kovalam
(Thiruvananthapuram) and 18 metre depth off Enayam (Kanyakumari).
2. No interviews: PSBs
to strengthen exam for clerical posts
Finance Ministry has asked Public Sector Banks (PSBs) to
strengthen written examination for recruitment of clerical and sub-staff posts
as there will be no interviews for such appointments.
The decision to change the recruitment process follows Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s directive that there was no need for holding
interviews for lower level posts.
3. India-Nepal
friendship bus service resumes after gap of 27 years
A friendship bus service between Nepal and India was flagged
off via Champawat district in Uttarakhand after a gap of 27 years. will run
between Kanchanpur in Nepal close to the Banbasa border in Champawat district
and Anand Vihar in New Delhi.
People travelling in these buses do not require any special
documents to travel. These buses are air conditioned and provide free wi-fi
connectivity to passengers.
4. Flipkart wins
‘Website of the Year India 2015
Flipkart has been named the winner of the ‘Website of the
Year India 2015’ in an online poll which was conducted by marketing analytics
company MetrixLab.
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has
won the Most Popular Website of the Year India 2015 Award for a second time in
a row in the leisure and travel category.
5. Alstom delivers
‘Made in India’ coaches to Kochi Metro
Alstom the French
transportation equipment maker rolled out the first set of railway coaches
for the Kochi Metro project. The Kochi coach order is the second rolling stock
contract for Alstom in the country, with Chennai metro the first.

6. PM Modi inaugurated Indian Science Congress
in Mysuru
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 103rd Indian
Science Congress in Mysore, Karnataka. The event is being held at the
University of Mysore from January 3 to 7.
The Indian Science Congress is being hosted in Karnataka
after 13 years and in Mysuru after 34 years.

7. “Two Indian
Capitals” in World’s top-30 “Super Cities”
According to the study conducted by international real
estate consultancy JLL, two Indian capitals have made it to a top-30 list of
the World’s most powerful, productive and connected cities.
India’s national capital

The list is topped by Tokyo
which is followed by New York,
London and Paris in the top four “super cities”.
8. Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran
Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir announced that Saudi Arabia
was severing diplomatic ties with Iran after demonstrators stormed its Tehran
embassy to protest against Riyadh’s execution of a Shiite cleric. Jubeir also
said that all Iranian diplomats must leave Saudi Arabia within 48 hours

8. China creates
three new Army units to modernise military
China has created three new military bodies as part of
reforms to modernise its military and improve its fighting capacity. Mr. Xi
said the three new units had been created as part of a modernisation reform and
“to realise the Chinese dream of a strong military”.

9. Indian “₹” among
best of Asian currencies 2015
“Rupee” turned out to
be one of the best performers in 2015 excluding yen.
Indian currency’s depreciation of 5% against the dollar was
less than the losses of most of its other Asian peers. It fared better in 2014,
when it weakened by only 2%.
Its Asian counterparts like the Indonesian rupiah weakened
by 11.30 % and the Thai baht depreciated 9.5% against the dollar. Only Chinese
currency fared marginally better, losing only 6%.
10. 3 NPCI Awards

Corporation Bank has received 3 awards at the “National
Payments Excellence Awards 2015” event recently. The function was organised by (NPCI).
The award was presented by R Gandhi, Deputy Governor of RBI.
Corporation Bank received the winner award jointly with Indian Bank for “Cheque Truncation System” under the
mid-sized category. The bank also received two runner-up awards for National Financial Switch for its
performance in acquirer transactions and Immediate
Payment Service (IMPS).
11. Javed Ahmed appointed
DG of Police of Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh Government appointed Javed Ahmed as the
new Director General of Police(DGP). He will replace vacant Jagmohan Yadav who
retired recently. Ahmed, a 1984 batch Indian Police Service officer, had
earlier served as the joint director of theCentral Bureau of Investigation
during central deputation, was serving as the director general (railways).He
will retire in 2020 .
12. SBI to buy 4 Air
India flats for Rs 90 crore
SBI is announced to buy four premium flats in the city’s
tony Peddar Road area from the
loss-making Air India.
The government recently gave go-ahead to state-owned Air
India to sell the flats to SBI for about Rs 90 crore as part the airline’s
asset monetisation plan.

13. RBI imposes Rs 1
crore fine on State Bank of Travancore
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary
penalty of one crore rupees on State Bank of Travancore, an SBI associate bank
for violation of some of its instructions. The monetary penalty was imposed on
State Bank of Travancore for violation of its instructions including reporting of
data to Central Repository of
Information on Large Credits (CRILC).
14. RK Mathur sworn in as
8th Chief Information Commissioner
Former Defence Secretary Radha Krishna Mathur (62) has sworn
in as the eight Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of the Central Information
Commission. He was administered the oath of office by the President Pranab
Mukherjee at a ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Mr. Mathur as
the CIC will have tenure of about three years i.e. till 2019 till he attains
the age of 65 years.
15. GOI constitutes Shyam
Benegal Committee to revamp Central Board of Film Censors
Government of India has constituted a Committee headed by
renowned film personality Shyam Benegal for
Holistic interpretation of the provisions of the Cinematograph Act and Rules.
The Board of film certification recently came under attack following the cuts
imposed on long kisses between Spectre’s lead actors Daniel Craig and Monica
Bellucci. The panel has been asked to submit its recommendations within two
months on reshaping the censor board, officially known as the Central Board of
Film Certification (CBFC).
16. All IRNSS satellites
to be in orbit by March: ISRO
Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) all the seven
satellites of Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) are expected
to be in the orbit by March 2016. IRNSS-1E is slated for launch on January 20
from the space port of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. Earlier ISRO launched
four satellites. Another satellite IRNSS-1E is on the launch pad. It is slated
for launch on January 20.
17. BSNL to set up 40,000
Wi-Fi Hotspots in the country
Public sector telecom major BSNL is working on setting up
40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots in the country to counter its inadequacy in providing 4G
data services. According to BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava they are at present
neither a 4G service provider, nor do they have the relevant spectrum to launch
this service. But to deal with this challenge, we are working on a scheme to
set up 40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots in the country, as it (Wi-Fi Hotspot) is faster
than 4G services. Under the scheme, 500 Wi-Fi Hotspots have been set up in the
country, and the company plans to increase them to 2,500 in the current
financial year.

inaugurated land bank web portal jharbhoom.nic.in
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on 4 January 2016
inaugurated the state's land bank web portal, jharbhoom.nic.in, that will help
investors know land-related information. With this, one would be able to get
information about the land which is available at the district and the circle
area level with a click of a mouse. This land bank will help investors get
information through district-wise nodal officers.
19. Nokia completed
acquisition of Alca-Lucent for 15.6 billion euro
Nokia Corporation on 5 January 2015 announced that it
completed the regulatory formalities for acquiring the French telecom equipment
company Alca-Lucent. The deal, worth 15.6 billion euro, was signed in 2014 and
later approved by the European Commission. With this acquisition, Nokia holds
79.32 percent of outstanding Alcatel-Lucent shares and at least 78.97 percent
of the French company's voting rights.
20. Mary Barra elected as
Chairman of General Motors Board of Directors
Mary Barra was on 4 January 2016 elected as Chairman of
General Motors (GM) Board of Directors with immediate effect. Barra succeeds
Theodore Solso, who will continue serving as the Lead Independent Director of the Board. Earlier,
Barra was serving as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GM since January 2014.
21.BSE launches web-based RTA portals for filing of disclosures
Bombay Stock Exchange Ltd launched a web-based portal for registrars and share transfer agents (RTAs) to enable depositories as well as file disclosures.
The move follows the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) decision to initiate a system involving stock exchanges, depositories and RTAs for generating system-based disclosures required under takeover regulations and insider trading norms.
